Our first Missional House
We are delighted that our first ever Missional Housing Bond in 2013 raised nearly £400,000 from a range of Christian investors - individuals, churches and charitable trusts.
After a competitive process, we selected St Peter’s, Bethnal Green CofE www.stpetersbethnalgreen.org as our first Local Missional Partner. St Peter’s is a vibrant and growing cross-tradition church, situated in the heart of historic Bethnal Green. The church is actively serving its local community in many different ways.

We purchased a two bedroom flat on a local housing estate, just a few minutes’ walk from the Church, to be the home for a couple of missional workers.
“We would not be able to afford to live in our current location without the support of Mission Housing. We are extremely blessed and look forward to continuing this partnership”
Jamie Turner and Sophia Underhill, core members of the leadership team at St Peter’s Bethnal Green, are championing two different projects to bring both practical help and music to the local community.
Jamie, a secondary school music teacher, and Sophia, a full-time masters student, have a passion to serve their community and share Jesus with their neighbours. Their vision is to develop and implement an initiative called ‘Parents’ Night Out’, providing affordable, fun and engaging childcare for local parents and carers so they can enjoy time away from their children. ‘With the myriad of challenges faced by many families in our community, we believe that a great way to both serve and build relationships is through providing a practical service,’ says Jamie. The goal is also to develop genuine relationships with local families: ‘Built into this ministry are opportunities to connect with families throughout the week,’ says Jamie, ‘with regular phone calls and home visits to show them we care.’
Another project is to set up a community choir with Jamie as choir master and director. The focus and aim is to bring beauty to Bethnal Green through high quality choral music. ‘Music has a way of cutting through the darkness and bringing about light,’ says Jamie. ‘We hope to share the gospel of Jesus through music and open doors to conversations.’
Mission Housing and the London Missional Housing Bond have allowed Jamie and Sophia to participate in and contribute to the work that God is doing in east London by enabling them to live at the heart of the community they are serving. ‘With our proximity to the church and the parish there is a natural bridge between our regular lives and that of serving the community,’ says Jamie. ‘We would not be able to afford to live in our current location without the support of Mission Housing. We are extremely blessed and look forward to continuing this partnership.’
